Welcome to the Spa

Cheltenham Spa Bowling Club was founded in 1924 with the opening of the bowling green and pavilion in St George's Square in the centre of Cheltenham. Club members take part in Mens, Ladies and Mixed Club, County and National Competitions and friendly and league matches against other clubs in the South West Midlands area. We occasionally travel further afield to places like South Wales and Devon. If you are interested in playing bowls go to our About page for further details about joining the Spa.

STOP PRESS! - The Spa is 100 years old - It's our Centenary!

The "Spa" is affiliated to Bowls England and the Gloucestershire Bowling Association and promotes the game of outdoor lawn bowls for men and women of all age groups and abilities.

Club members continue to manage, operate and maintain the club and its Green almost entirely with voluntary labour, which is reflected in our annual full membership fee of £80 for 2024.

The rest of this page is mainly for tourists. Read on for more information about the many and varied attractions in the Cheltenham area if you are visiting on a bowls tour.

Mainly for Tourists

Cheltenham Spa Bowling Club entertains several touring sides each season. The fact that we regularly have touring teams reflects the club's hospitality and central location within five minutes walk of the famous Promenade and proximity to town centre hotels. Non bowling members of touring parties can visit one of the finest regional shopping areas while their other halves play bowls and wonder how much they are spending!

If shopping is not your choice there are visits to the town's gardens, restaurants, art gallery and museum as a pleasant way to spend your time in Cheltenham, either as a day out or as a touring centre for bowling. An often overlooked garden is the one named after Dr Edward Jenner, the discoverer of the smallpox vaccine, that lies just next door to the club.

The Friends of Jenner Gardens website, hosted by the club, is here.

While many touring sides arrive at the club by coach, there are a number of options for clubs who elect to travel by car. There are several council-run and private car parks close to the green - Contact the club to find out more information including an arrangement we have with a local business to use their car park at selected times. Also, it is worth noting that the on-street parking restrictions imposed near the club from Monday to Saturday are suspended on Sunday. Please check the street signs in the various locations.

You can find our club in St George's Square which is at the junction of Ambrose Street and High Street in the North West section of the printable version of the town centre map provided by the Tourist Information Centre or in Google maps here.
